"Beginning in late June 1941, many KV-1s and a few KV-2s were fitted with auxiliary fuel tanks to extend their combat range. These fuel tanks were mounted on the fenders and were not directly plumbed into the vehicles internal fuel system. Instead, the crew was required to manually transfer fuel from the fender-mounted fuel tanks to the vehicles internal fuel tanks [...]. By the spring of 1942 it was standart practice for one tank to carry engine oil rather than fuel, a testement to the prodigious oil consumption of the V-2K engine. [...]
These tanks were mounted on KV-1 model 1940s, commencing in late June 1941 and continuing until mid-September. Some Model 1940s fitted with ehkrany spaced armor carried the tanks, and photographs indicate that they were even fitted to a few KV-2 Model 1940s. Up to seven tanks could be fitted [...]"
